Thattekad Bird Sanctuary
Thattekad Bird Sanctuary or Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, lying in the foothills of the Western Ghats, a preserved bird sanctuary, boasts of being the biggest bio- diverse habitat in Kerala. It is home to a good population of both resident as well as migratory birds. When visiting its bird sanctuary, you can indulge in a number of activities, the prime one being bird watching. The option of both individual and group levels is possible. The option of trekking is also available in certain parts of the forest.
Silent Valley National Park
One of the largest national parks of Kerala, Silent Valley sprawls over 235 km sq. 16 bird species, 100 species of flowering plants, 108 species of orchids, 34 species of mammals and thousand other creatures call this national park their home. Here you may catch a glimpse of animals like tiger, leopard, sloth bear, elephant, sloth bear, wild boar, sambar, spotted deer and many others.
There are legends behind Silent Valley, which is also known as Sairandhrivanam amongst the locals. Sairandhrivanam in Malayalam means Forest of Sairandhi. This christening is associated with Draupadi, (the polyandrous wife of Pandavas) who disguised herself as Sairandhri. It is believed that Pandavas halted here, beside the river where wild creature comes to quench their thirst. This is indeed is a dangerous place to halt at.
Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary
Placed in a valley between the Nelliampathy ranges of Kerala and the Anamalai ranges of Tamil Nadu in the majestic Western Ghats, Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven of serenity and verdant greenery. The sanctuary houses teak plantation that has been managed scientifically for the very first time and also has the tallest and oldest teak tree in the world.
Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary
Located on the outskirts of the capital city Thiruvananthapuram (around 50km away), Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kerala; acquiring an area approximately 53sq. km. on the Western Ghats. Established in 1938, the sanctuary is well-known for its breathtaking beauty of lush forests, crystal clear streams, rolling and rocky terrains. Peppara is also renowned as a trekker’s delight.
